Aerial Yoga
Mariana uses the Unnata Yoga technique to teach Aerial Yoga. In the aerial yoga practices, the body is partially or totally suspended by a fabric.
In this particular technique, the traditional asanas (yoga postures) are adapted in order to incorporate the idea of suspension by means of a fabric hanging vertically from the ceiling.
In this practice, one of it's defining factors is the force of gravity. In order to feel more deeply it's effects, one must allow the force of gravity to act, while the body or parts of the body are being held by the fabric. This way, it becomes possible to neutralize old and unconscious postural habits. This is possible because as we surrender to the force of gravity, we end up
letting go of dominant muscle groups and allow more activity in the core muscles. The resulting sensation is a combination of strength, lightness and relaxation.
The class itself is playful and fun. The idea of hanging upside down brings up different emotions like fear as well as childhood memories. Besides yoga, the practice of Aerial Yoga has roots in the aerial circus arts. However, the practitioner remains mostly hip high level away from the floor for most of the time. It is common to hear laughter as well as sighing with relief during class. Aerial yoga is recommended for all ages and fitness levels. It is not recommended for those with high blood pressure, glaucoma, or with an extreme fear of heights. In the majority of cases, the ones who come in fearful of heights, usually overcome their issues by the second or third class, and are in many cases the ones end up gaining more from the practice.
